Chandragupta Maurya (322-298 BC)

  • With the help of Chanakya, know as Kautilya or Vishnugupta, he overthrew the Nandas & established the rule of Maurya Dynasty
  • He defeated Selucus Necator in 305 BC
  • A Greek Ambassador Megasthenes (sent by Selucus) visited his court. Megasthenes wrote the book ‘Indica’

Bindusara (298 – 272 BC)

  • Chandragupta was succeeded by his son Bindusara in 297 BC. At the time of his death, almost the entire subcontinent cane under the Mauryan rule

Ashoka (269 – 236 BC)

  • Regarded as one of the greatest kings of all times
  • There are 14 major rock edict inscription, 17 minor rock edict and 12 pillar edict inscriptions
  • In his inscriptions these languages were used: Brahmi, Kharoshthi, Armaic and Greek
  • THE KALINGA WAR (261 BC) changed his attitude towards life, Ashoka became a Buddhist after that
  • Bulit the Sanchi Stupa
  • He appointed officials called Dhamma Mahamatya for moral control of people
  • The last Mauryan king Brihadratha was killed by Pushyamitra Shunga in 185 BC, who started the Shunga dynasty in Magadha
